Oil paint has a reputation for being difficult to apply but gives better results than water-based paint. Which should you choose? Here are 3 types of paint to consider for your next DIY project.
Chalk paint
Chalk paint is a type of latex, meaning that it’s water-based. It’s especially suitable for upcycling, and the thick texture makes it so opaque that you can often apply just one coat, usually with a paintbrush. It’s ideal on cupboards, shelves, wicker baskets and furniture. However, avoid using it on glass or other metallic or reflective surfaces.
This type of paint can be sanded, unlike many others, to obtain a more matte finish. If you’re a fan of the antique look and want to freshen up old furniture, this is the paint for you!
You should know that water-based paint has become as effective as oil paint. However, they do have differences in terms of application, maintenance and concentration of chemical compounds.
Oil paint
The most frequently used oil-based paint for small DIY projects comes in aerosol cans. Also known as spray paint, it’s perfect for upcycling decorative objects like pots, vases, storage bins, coffee tables and mirror frames. It’s slower to dry than other paints and difficult to clean but is highly resistant to humidity. And, since it’s oil-based, it doesn’t require primer.
Before starting, make sure you know what surface you’ll be painting. Oil paint can be used on plastic, metal, glass, wooden furniture and even your car. Each of these projects requires the appropriate materials.
EspaceProprio Tip When applying spray paint, do it outdoors. Check the product label and safety sheet. Beware of isocyanates: this family of chemicals, which is added to the paint, can irritate the respiratory tract, eyes and skin.
Mineral paint
The name speaks for itself. Mineral paint contains natural minerals and the main bonding agent is therefore of mineral origin, not organic. This paint is water-permeable and comes off when sanded. There are various types.
1. Silicate paint
Often applied to cement walls, silicate paint is a good choice if you’re making changes to your patio or yard. It’s weather resistant, non-toxic and microporous.
2. Lime paint
Often used indoors because it’s a little less resistant, being permeable to vapour. It also has a natural finish and is an excellent eco-responsible choice.
3. Paint based on water, clay and mineral pigments
It coats well and is good for almost any type of work. It’s beautiful both indoors and out!
